Why Meetings Matter

Why is it that meetings are so maligned? I can't think of many other things that universally raise the ire of so many. Having sat through many ineffective meetings in my day I would venture a guess that the generalized hatred is because too often meetings are poorly planned and poorly run thus producing no real outcome except frustrated, resentful attendees who feel their time has been wasted.
